It’s a dirty job…

As arts and entertainment editor of the county’s only weekly print publication, it is my responsibility to inform and entertain readers while providing support to the local arts community through exposure   Recently I’ve been getting feedback about how we’re not covering enough of this and enough of that. To say I’m passionate about what I do is an understatement, and I do my absolute best to make sure the love gets spread around to every corner of the county and every segment of the arts community. The fact is, the newspaper biz is struggling and it needs help too.  We are supported through advertising and readership–both of which could use a boost. The amount of space we have to work with is directly related to the number of paid ads in our publication. Remember this please when you request a free calendar listing or a free after dark pick of the week, or an article about your project or a cd review etc…..  It’s a two-way street, a partnership, a symbiotic relationship and we need you as much as you need us.

All that said, in case you’re wondering what I do (and who to blame when certain things go wrong):

  • Plan the arts section (art and culture, music, film/media) and oversee happenings (calendar). Determine what is running and who will write the articles. Participate in planning of the rest of the paper.
  • Hire freelance writers for the arts section
  • Edit and proofread copy for the arts section.
  • Write copy on a nearly weekly basis for the arts section or cover.
  • Compile gallery and theater listings and create calendar picks of the week and put them online
  • Compile after dark listings and create picks of the week
  • Update VCReporter’s Facebook page
  • Proofread newsletter, write headlines, strategize special issues, develop writers and columnists, interface with the arts community. . .

  1. beautiful Michel, you are amazing (!) with who you are and what you do… AMAZING!!!!
your job description is the work of a large staff, not one person.. so how about
all of your readers get into their higher selves… enjoying and a p p r e c i a t i n g what you bring to their lives and their entertainment, (FOR FREE MIND YOU)…. a let the small petty parts of ourselves drop away so that we can truly practice gratitude for all that is sent our way.. and for the people that pull mulitple all-nighters to send it our way…
before we gripe, bitch or complain, let;’s take a breathe in deep gratitude and bring to the next moment what is the highest good we can bring.. making the world. our world a little nicer and more enjoyable… just a thought… love james

  2. I for one am extremely upset that you do not cover the incredibly vibrant Kenyan Polka Revival that is happening in our community.
